After turning Venom’s world upside down a year ago, DONNY CATES and RYAN STEGMAN are about to put the Sinister Symbiote through hell again, only this time CARNAGE has come calling, and everyone who’s ever worn a symbiote is dead in his sights! He’s skirted the periphery of the Marvel Universe for months, but Cletus Kasady at last stands poised to make his grand return to New York in a blistering triple-sized story…and he wants to paint the town red!
GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:
If you are looking for a slow burning, take your time crossover comic then this ain’t the comic for you. Other than WOTR this comic gets straight into the action. Its packed full of plot development, chaos and a great story its self. Its safe to say there isn’t a dull moment in Absolute Carnage #1.
As expected in most crossovers, its not until the 3rd or 4th issue that things really get going…not in Absolute Carnage. Straight from the get go @dcates mixes together an army or symbiote infected inmates, a great Speer-Man cameo and a mentally homicidal Norman Osborn plus much much more. The one thing that really grabbed my attention was the fact its revealed that this story will impact the whole of the Marvel Universe…Having Brock point out that Carnage is targeting anyone who has ever worn a sqymbiote was truly a great way to let this cat out of the bag, especially when Spider-man confirms “thats a long list”.
The great narrative by Cates is complemented by @ryanstegman’s amazing artwork that really made me stop and stare. In this comic, Carnage is huge, the perspective of his god-like frame over Venom or the gory horror movie-like bit where Norman Osborn rips his gooey chest open are just a few examples of Stegman’s art working wonderfully with the story.
We get a clear in-depth look in to Brock’s true hatred of Carnage and with Cletus Kasady’s Joker-like grin or the depravity in Norman Osborn’s eyes, Stegman powerfully shows us what the characters are feeling. As a result the heroes, the villains and overall story contain great nightmarish plot elements that will have you sleeping with one eye open!
For me Absolute Carnage #1 absolutely knocked the ball out of the park. It’s too early to give an overall verdict on the series but, as of today, it’s clear to see that Marvel has taken the crossover formula from WOTR to make sure the newest event is another winner.
