GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: The Batman Who Laughs - The Grim Knight #1

Mar 20, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The Batman Who Laughs - The Grim Knight #1

Release Date: 13/03/19

Before I get started with the review let me point out that you will fully understand this comic more if you have been reading The Batman Who Laughs.

What would you do if you were Bruce Wayne? What would you do If you were able to rid the city of evil?

Would you take it upon yourself to use any weapon and go to any lengths to stop those whom you deemed worthy of death or would you abide by the law?

In The Batman Who Laughs - The Grim Knight #1 we get to find out the answer to that exact question and learn the secret origin of the second-deadliest Batman, who was hand picked by the Batman Who Laughs to bring his dark plans to life!! This issue mainly concentrates on finding out about the Grim Knights character and why he has captured commissioner Gordon.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:I have to admit that although this comic did start off slow, The Grim Knight does provide some much-needed backstory to the character, which I do believe will pay off for readers of the main Batman Who Laughs storyline down the line. As the story progresses though it does become intense and thrilling, I for one couldn't help thinking that at the end of every page something big was going to happen which makes you want to scan every page twice to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

The key focus of this comic is clearly the back story and I have to say it does a great job of tying everything together. Throughout the issue the flash backs become more in-depth and for me the most interesting theme of the issue is the way in which it examines the relationship between Grim Knight and Gordon, and it reveals why Grim Knight decided to take Gordon with him in the first place. I don’t want to give too much away but the ending turns the story upside-down and makes you look at Grim Knight differently (I found myself understanding him a lot more, even feeling almost sorry for him!!)

For a one-shot release it has a big 28-page story and although The Grim Knight is a solid one at that if i’m honest it doesn’t pack quite as much punch as its central storyline.

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: The Amazing Spider-Man #17.HU

Mar 16, 2019

  • Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The Amazing Spider-Man #17.HU

Release Date: 06/03/19

So Marvel have been teasing a huge Kraven story since ASM #1 – and finally “HUNTED” is here to deliver it! Sergei Kravinoff and his gang have been kidnapping animal-themed characters for months, but the one they have longed for and need to complete their collection is of course....the Spider. But what does Kraven even want with all of them?!

As I mentioned in ASM #16 review you didn’t have to read that issue to understand what’s been happening. This issue on the other hand does a great job of tying everything together. while giving us a clear insight to Kraven’s new unique point of view. He’s no longer interested in hunting and has changed his ways. His son/clone may be more like he used to be, but the plan taking place appears to be all part of his new lease on life. Spider-Man is even more on edge and sets out to put an end to it all.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

The closer and closer we got to the Hunted arc the more excited I became. I’ve said it time and time again but this was a pretty awseome comic to read. Ive read ASM from #1 so to finally be the mix of HUNTED is amazing(pun intended). The fight between Spidey and Kraven’s son is insane and after a seeing Spider-Man in the black suit again that’s when I knew “Hunted” was going to be a serious arc to get into!

“HUNTED” is a story arc that no Spider-man fan should miss. BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!!

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: Amazing Spider-Man #16.HU

Mar 10, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The Amazing Spider-Man #16.HU

Release Date: 06/03/19

WHAT-A-COVER...anything with Black Cat on the front is always popular but a cover with her and Spider-Man, this is always going to be a hit and I can guarantee that this will be a very wanted issue. This mini-event is adding a new kind of numbering to the comics and this time it’s with “HU” numbering.

If you’ve been reading the series you will know that this “HUNTED” tie-in shows that Black Cat’s luck is on the rise. She narrowly escaped a run in with the Thieves Guild (she probably has only 6 lives left now) her relationship with Spider-Man is somewhat mended and the world is her oyster. But the job she just took is going to change everything…and potentially not in a good way.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

I really enjoyed this issue. Obviously everyone knows that Spider-Man had a relationship with MJ but this includes new flashback moments revealing more about Black Cat and Spider-Man’s relationship!!! There’s great bits of detective work done for Black Cat’s character throughout and by the end, like me, you’ll understand and respect the character even more. The inclusion of Hammerhead, Taskmaster and Black Ant leads to some exciting fight scenes (the artwork is amazing!) and some new revelations for Black Cat.

Overall this issues gives the bigger story a nudge in the right direction, but if you’re looking for an issue that’s heavily important to the tie-in, you can skip this one if I’m honest.

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: HEROES IN CRISIS #6

Mar 06, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: Heroes in Crisis #6

Release Date: 27/02/19

So after the drama of issue #5 I was chomping at the bit when this came out out but there’s not a whole lot that I can say about this issue.

It’s not great and this is easily the worst issue of this title’s run...Unfortunately. If I’m honest it’s a complete waste of time and can easily be skipped. Nothing happens in this issue that hasn’t already happened and that we don’t already know!!! The only plus side is the use of Harley and Ivy’s interactions here! They’re fun, both completely on point and it’s a glimpse of what could be some of the greatest character work between these two we’ve ever seen. Yet again Harley saves the day.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

There was so much potential for Heroes in Crisis, with a stellar cast including fan favourites it had the makings of being one of the greatest comic runs out there but instead it’s become this flimsy murder mystery where we already know who the killer is. I’m seriously hoping that with only three issues left this bump in the road can be ignored and the comic can end as strongly as it started!!!

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: HULKVERINES #1

Mar 04, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: Hulkverines #1

Release Date: 20/02/19

When I first found out about this comic in August last year I thought Marvel had combined Wolverine with the Hulk to take on the world. How wrong was I, It's actually better than that!! Wolverine + Hulk = Weapon H...WOW!!!!

In this first issue we find out that Clay Cortez, an ordinary soldier and family man was transformed into the ultimate killing machine, Weapon H by the Weapon X program. With Adamantium throughout his body, Gamma juiced blood and healing abilities, Clay became a Hulk-Wolverine hybrid of the world's two greatest hunters.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

I’m a sucker for action and this comic had it all. From the start where we see The Leader being visited at a high security prison and using a piece of paper to make his daring escape to the Hulk fighting against the Avengers (read The immortal Hulk #7 to find out how this happened). Without saying too much the ending was impactful and well deserved and I have to say having Wolverine and the Hulk back in action - and coming after the dangerous creation made in their name makes this a refreshing comic that will have you counting down the days until the release of #2
