GEEKY GUY CONICS REVIEWS: DECEASED #1

May 22, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: DCeased #1

Written by: Tom Taylor

Artists: Trevor Hairline, Stefano Gaudiano & James Harren

Cover Artist: Greg Capullo

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 01/05/19

SYNOPSIS:

A mysterious techno-virus has been released on Earth, infecting 600 million people and turning them instantly into violent, monstrous engines of destruction. The heroes of the DCU are caught completely unprepared for a pandemic of this magnitude and struggle to save their loved ones first... but what happens to the World’s Greatest Heroes if the world ends?

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

First things first lets take a moment to bask in the glory of the array of variant covers available for this series. There are some amazing ones out there from the likes of @greghornart & Inhyuk Lee so let me know what ones have caught your eye.

As fan of @AMC The Walking Dead so to have a DC comic that includes Zombies, Death everywhere and Superheroes on a mission to save the world from a zombie apocalypse I was chomping at the bit to read this and I have to say it didn’t disappoint. DCeased #1’s opening sequence is quite frankly awesome and gets straight into it with a BANG!! With Darkseid and his armies defeated by the Justice League he has been banished from Earth, but it seems thats exactly what he wanted for his plan to be put into action, to assemble the Anti-Life Equation – a system of control over all sentient life. I agree he has done this many times before but this time it seems different. This time he holds one half of it already and finds the other in Cyborg, whom he has taken prisoner on Apokolips. With Superman’s home of Metropolis as ground zero we see the brutal, vicious and unforgiving mayhem spread like wildfire. Don’t get me wrong I loved this but I don’t feel like there is enough. If this is meant to be happening across the universe at least show a bit of it in other locations instead of just Metropolis.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I don’t want to give to much away but I can already see myself getting hooked. DC seems to have produced something worth shouting about with the DCeased series and I for one will be at the front of the line when the next issue comes out. I just hope it doesn’t follow the same path as Heroes In Crisis did and become quite disappointing as the story progresses. We all want a happy ending but some of us don’t want there to be any. For once I don’t want to see any possible positive outcomes. I want to feel like the situation is hopeless and that heroes are doomed to fail.   But even more important than that I want to know what would happen if that was the case.

Overall DCeased #1 is quite fun. The comic is an easy and enjoyable read and ticks all the boxes you’d expect a story like this to in its first issue. Its great to see @DC being smart and taking our real life obsession with smart phones and social media to make a very impactful comic out of it that can hopefully continue for the full run.

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: The War of the Realms: Strikeforce – The War Avengers #1

May 19, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The War of the Realms: Strikeforce – The War Avengers #1

Written by: Dennis ‘Hopeless’ Hallum

Artists: Ario Anindito, Kim Jacinto

Cover Artist: Kim Jacinto

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 15/05/19

If you have only just started reading these comics, this ties directly into issue #3 of the main comic giving a full backstory of how this strike team came together. Some might say that there are too many tie-ins from this War of The Realms run but personally I can’t get enough of them. I agree that its a lot to get your head around as to when and where they are taking place  but the more action and superheroes the better no? This one was always going to be a must have for me having been drawn by my friend and Marvel artistic genius @arioanin. Once again mate you have smashed it out the park!!!

SYNOPSIS:

Captain Marvel leads the fight to reclaim Midgard! But even with a crew of heavy hitters (Weapon H, Captain Britain, Venom, Deadpool) and two of the best spies on the planet (the Winter Soldier and the Black Widow) is Carol fighting a losing game?

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

So maybe I was always going to be biased when it came to the review for this one but in all honesty I really enjoyed it. Having Deadpool take centre stage was always going to be a winning formula, he is full of his usual one liners, witty and making subtle jokes about stuff like the upcoming Black Widow movie. If you love Deadpool, @dennishopelesscomics has done a great job of capturing him with this one. The artwork is outstanding and its clear to see that @arioanin had fun drawing it. I personally know it took him some long hours and sleepless nights but I think you’ll agree with me that it was worth it.

Overall its a decent comic with plenty of action. This isn’t a must read tie in as the main event involving Venom has already taken part in the main story and Captain Marvel comes across as a slightly less authoritative leader instead of the fearless one we are used to but if you are wanting to see more War Avengers this one is for you. Also for the readers of the main run, check out a great little nod towards @rdauterman on page 23!

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: THE WAR OF THE REALMS #4

May 16, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The War of The Realms #4

Written by: Jason Aaron

Artist: Russell Dauterman

Cover Artist: Arthur Adams

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 15/05/19

I guess the good thing about reading an issue late is the fact that its fresh in the mind once the next issue comes out..This is one time I’m so glad I did it.. The War of The Realms keeps getting better and better with every issue and tie-in that is released. If you thought #3 was awesome this latest instalment will change that.

SYNOPSIS:

The realms are in chaos, Midgard is the by far the worst as of late. While Issue #3 saw our heroes working together to gain control over Malekith’s ongoing assault. The War of The Realms #4 takes things to a whole new level, with all our heroes finally gaining the upper hand along with some much-needed ground in this war.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

As did the previous issue, this one continues with the fast paced blink and you’ll miss it battle scenes, in-depth artwork and a compelling narrative. For me it’ the comic version of a gift that keeps on giving!!! It features plenty of fast-paced storytelling, action galore sequences, and a few exciting character moments for Freyja and Odin that actually made me LOL. Oh and the part with Thor is pretty fricking EPIC as well! On the whole I have to say that I really enjoyed this issue especially when The Punisher, Ghost Rider, Blade andHulk (Jen Walters) all rejoin the rest of the team at Avengers Mountain to plan to final attack on Malekith, lead by none other that Jane Foster, All-Mother of Asgard…Or so we thought. The battle scene between Freyja and the Dark Elves is emotionally intense; I mean how many Dark Elves can one goddess kill? Without giving too much away, I for one didn’t know that Malekith had a secret weapon and its bite seems to be pretty…VENOMOUS.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

With the amazing story from @jasonaaron paired with the unreal art from @rdauterman and @colourmatt they have delivered an incredible visual experience. Given that this comic run has clearly been set out so that most of the story in each issue is told through its action sequences, it’s appropriate that those sequences be truly magnificent. Every little detail is included and thats one of the main reasons it makes this one of my favourite comics of the year so far. Having Freyja is made to be the star of this issue is fitting and rightly so. She is armed with a sword called the Bitterblade, which causes her to don an evil dark aura. She looks insanely awesome throughout this issue and it goes without saying that Odin wearing a gift from Tony Stark is downright badass.

The progression of each issue is fast-paced while tying up plot threads along the way and I will never be bored with the continuous action from page to page. Just when I honestly thought it couldn’t get better The War of the Realms dream team of Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and Matthew Wilson have continued to go from strength to strength and have topped themselves in several respects, exceeding already high expectations. Not sure about you guys but I’m  preparing myself for the final battle where the forces of good must win to save the realms… Could it be an AVENGERS ASSEMBLE moment???

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: THE WAR OF THE REALMS #3

May 14, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The War of The Realms #3

Written by: Jason Aaron

Artist: Russell Dauterman

Cover Artist: Arthur Adams

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 01/05/19

This is definitely one of my favourite comic series at the moment, its got everything from great narrative and in-depth artwork to amazing non-stop action scenes. I have to say that @Jasonaaron seems to be getting all the miles he can out of bringing the Marvel Universe’s greatest heroes to Middle Earth for the War of the Realms, franchise and its incredibly done… a fitting grand goodbye to his years-long Thor run.

SYNOPSIS:

Our heroes are in serious trouble in Issue #3, Malekith and his dark alliance have all but obliterated Earth’s Mightiest and since you can’t have a major Marvel crossover without the fan favourites (Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel) leading the charge, they have to go rescue Thor.

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

This issue has everything you could wish for from a series including the whole MCU. There is a lot to love about this issue and the way the story switches between character interaction and missions is truly enjoyable. While Daredevil, Jane Foster, and Heimdall protect the newly reopened Bifrost from saboteurs, Captain Marvel’s War Avengers (SERIOUSLY HOW COOL DOES THAT SOUND…) takes the fight to Malekith himself hopefully distracting him from both Freyja’s team; The Punisher, She-Hulk, Blade and Ghost Rider sent to destroy the Black Bifrost and Captain America’s squad headed to Jotunheim to rescue Thor. To add insult to injury every continent on Earth has become Malekith’s personal battleground. With Roxxon taking control of Antarctica, the Trolls assaulting Australia, The Queen of Cinders burning Asia to the ground, The War Angels laying waste to Africa, Enchantress creating a fearful new Land of the Dead in South America, and the Frost Giants holding North America. Where ever evil arrives the heroes do everything in their power to stop them.

It was mentioned in the built up to this series that Daredevil would have huge part to play and i’m ecstatic to finally say it has arrived! Taking the sword of Heimdall and becoming, for the moment at least, a god is mouth watering. Having him, as a mortal withstand the pressure of seeing and hearing everything in the universe? (if you have seen Avengers Endgame you will know the similarities of the part I am referring to). His part in this run can only get better and with his new story arc continuing in “The God Without Fear” its plain to seeing the big things planned for Hell’s Kitchen’s Devil.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Once again @rdauterman & @colourmatt has done a fantastic job of bringing Aaron’s script to life. This issue is packed full of exciting, detailed, eye catching panels. I don’t want to give anything away but the final page is easily the centrepiece of this entire issue. The rage, the raw emotion and in depth artwork is truly mouth watering, it actually sent shivers down my spine…WHAT A MOMENT!  It’s clear to see that Aaron is consistent throughout steadily creating a masterpiece adaptation of his Thor run that will go naturally in to any comic fanatics collection.

There are moments in War of the Realms #3 that seem to hold pre-planned or not similarities between record-setting blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. It is so enjoyable to see the creative team of Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and Matt Wilson working continuously well together to bring us a beautiful, rich world of heroes and villains, humans and monsters, to fight for the continued existence of Midgard…AVENGERS ASSEMBLE?!!

In my opinion, at the moment there is not a more well rounded, talented, and creative team in comics today.  Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and Matthew Wilson I thank you for what you are doing and cannot wait to see where you take this epic tale next!
