Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: The War Of The Realms: Omega #1

Coloured by: Matt Milla, Jesus Arbutov, David Curiel, Juan Ferreyra

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 07/10/2019

SYNOPSIS:

THE WAR IS OVER – AND THE MARVEL UNIVERSE MUST PICK UP THE PIECES!

Midgard is broken, and as heroes of Asgard and Earth alike start to sift through the pieces, new heroes — and villains — emerge. What’s next for Jane Foster, now free of the hammer she was willing to die to hold? Thor’s brother Loki faced a terrible fate in the War of the Realms — and now the god of mischief must make himself anew. For the Punisher, the war isn’t even close to finished — but this time, he’s got his own army. And for Thor himself, destiny has finally arrived. The God of Thunder strikes out for a whole new adventure!

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

First things first, What did you all think of WOTR?? For me it was the best comic run i’ve read this year. The main story and character continuity flowed flawlessly and the climatic ending was a perfect way to close the curtain on such a hyped up spectacle.

The War of The Realms: Omega on the other hand didn’t really have me chopping at the bit like its predecessor. Instead of it being a true epilogue for the WOTR and everything it should have been, it fell short and was basically a book and of fragmented short character stories promoting what’s in store for the Marvel heroes in the upcoming Marvel universe. Just so you are aware of these let me break it down:

God and the Devil Walk into a Church - Daredevil and Heimdall

The Job I Have To Do - Jane Foster

Born Small - Loki

War Orphans - The Punisher

There’s part of me that wishes I hadn’t of read this as it kind of put a dampener on the well rounded and action packed ending in WOTR #6. Being a huge fan of Jason Aaron I guess my expectations for this were very high and based on the previous issue he did they shouldn’t have been anything less!! Is it me or were the rest of you hoping to get some closure for the events of War of the Realms? We did get that, but at the same time, this was really just a promo for the new character runs and stories from Marvel.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Overall I liked this comic but I didn’t love it. Why is Malekith on the cover?? he doesn’t even make an appearance?! For me when a comic is written and designed by so many different people you expect differences and slight changes to appear but I have to say surprisingly this didn’t happen here and the book is very cohesive. It’s not a comic that is necessary as a wrap up but I would say that new character stories created here are exciting and I can’t wait to see where they lead. With Loki #1 and Thor #15 already on the shelves I will definitely be picking up the Valkyrie book this week (released 24/07/19). Jason Aaron should be proud of the War he created and its future impact it’s going to have on the Marvel Universe. WATCH THIS SPACE…

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIEWS: WOLVERINE VS BLADE #1

Jul 19, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: Wolverine Vs Blade #1

Written by: Marc Guggenheim

Cover Artist: Dave Wilkins

Penciler: Dave Wilkins

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 10/07/19

SYNOPSIS:

Two of the deadliest hunters ever to have stalked the night face off! Wolverine vs. Blade — ’nuff said!

**Before I start let me just mention that this comic contains mature content. The images used in the review are directly from the comic so if you don’t like a bit of gore I would advise against purchasing this comic.**

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

Now and again a comic comes along that just instantly grabs ya! Whether it be the artwork on the cover, the build up to the release or the actual reading of it. I for one can safely say that all of the above applied to me and I gotta say I liked it more than I actually thought I was going to. Sometimes one shot comics can get lost and fall through the vast cracks of the comic world. The majority of the times these seem to pass us by is because they seemingly have no real reason for being released and it’s probably definitely the case for Marc Guggenheim and Dave Wilkin’s Wolverine vs Blade one shot, a comic that feels like a relic from the mid-00’s brought to today.

What we get here is two of the baddest muthaf&%£kers in the Marvel Universe, Blade and Wolverine teaming up to fight some vampires and also battle each other. If i’m being honest, for me its exactly like every other superhero “vs” book you’ve read before but the only difference this time around is that the main fights only lasts about 2 pages instead of the majority of the book.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

As some of you will know Marc Guggenheim’s Blade run began in 2006 and its quite refreshing to see his script for this comic reading like his scripts of old. I loved the fact that Wolverine appears exclusively in his X-Force costume and feel it fits into the story flow very well.

In regards to the artwork, Dave Wilkin’s has done a great job. For me his style is a mixture of Clayton Crain and Stjepan Sejic, it works well for the action scenes, but  when Wolverine and Blade are investigating the new Vampire threat separately it falls pretty flat. Even though It’s certainly solid artwork its not as cool as it could have been.

For those of you that have been reading WOTR this isn’t a tie in in any way shape or form. It doesn’t really seem like it’s going to matter at all in the grand scheme of the overall Marvel universe currently, and in all likelihood it was probably found in a file on someone’s computer who realised that they could release this book and get some cash for it from fans of either character. As it stands right now, if you have to have everything featuring Wolverine or Blade (I’m sure there’s some of you out there that do), you could do worse than Wolverine vs Blade.

Overall there’s nothing wrong with this comic but there also isn’t anything super amazing about it that makes it a must read. If you just want a quick fighting and gore fix, this is the one for you.

GEEKY GUY COMICS REVIWS: LOKI #1

Jul 19, 2019

Hey GEEKS

Comic Name: Loki #1

Written by: Daniel Kibblesmith

Cover Artist: Oscar Bazaldua

Colored by: David Curiel

Published by: Marvel Comics

Release Date: 17/07/19

SYNOPSIS:

EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HERO! ALL-NEW ONGOING SERIES! After dying a grisly death in THE WAR OF THE REALMS, Loki learned a valuable lesson in warmongering: Don't get caught. But now he has a whole new set of responsibilities - and his brother Thor is not about to let him walk away from them this time. Late Show and BLACK PANTHER VS. DEADPOOL writer Daniel Kibblesmith takes the god of mischief in a thrilling new direction!

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

When WOTR finished I found myself struggle to deal with the comic world, i wasn’t sure what to do and no comics were up to scratch….Then the news broke and I was over the moon to find out that the God of Mischief Loki was going to star in his own comic as a result of the epic war on Midgaard, the balance has been restored lol.

At the end of WOTR we found out that Loki was now the king of the Frost Giants and ruler of Jotunheim so naturally he will become his bold, charismatic self once again and just sit on the throne and shout orders right?…WRONG he’s going to be hanging out in a high class casino under the hustling streets Manhattan. And so it begins the adventure of Thor’s half-brother (some might say better) in the first issue of his own comic that is sure to have all the cockiness, edginess and comedic traits he brought to WOTR and the marvel movies.

The issue starts with him gambling in Manhattan. After everything he has been through, literally having just been eaten alive by his father for him to want to be something (and maybe someone) else makes total sense. I mean who wouldn’t want to gamble the night away and drink after that! With the arrival of a worthy villain to follow Things only get more complicated when his half-brother Thor shows-up and demands to know why he is not residing over Jotunheim. Could it be because the Frost Giants are so big so for them to respect someone so small is causing great difficulty, or could it be the because he is LOKi and does what he wants?

FINAL THOUGHTS:

When I found out that Loki #1 was written by Late Show writer Daniel Kibblesmith I have to say I wasn’t shocked but slightly optimistic. I know he has written comics before but how was he going to deal with Loki? Easily and I have to he has done an excellent job so well done sir! Along with the writing skills of Kibblesmith, veteran comic book artist Oscar Bazaldua (War Of The Realms Omega #1, Mr. And Mrs. X Vol. 1: Love And Marriage) is on hand to  give Loki an amazing yet suitably entertaining and charming first issue that wouldn’t be out of place in a big budget movie.

Loki #1 makes a solid first impression and it’s a fun ride with the combination of Deadpool-like humor and classic Asgardian fantasy. Its a lot of fun and it’s fair to say that Loki will probably get even more wild as it progresses.

IndieGoGo cover: Nick Cagnetti

Page Count: 24 pages

SYNOPSIS:

Mysterious past...colorful costume...altruistic...nomadic lifestyle...it's all pretty cool!  Pink Lemonade dreams of doing big things. She just wants to be good and help where she can. But things don't always work out the way we plan.

At Geeky Guy Comics I’m not just about reviewing comics from the big names like Marvel, DC, IDW etc I’m also very much for giving the smaller guys a chance to showcase their talent and Pink Lemonade written by Nick Canetti has exactly that. If you would like to purchase this comic then make sure you check out the Pink Lemonade IndieGoGo campaign. Its got some great packages on there so be sure to check it out before the campaign ends on July 23, 2019

GEEKY GUY COMICS VERDICT:

SO Let me start by saying that the artwork from the covers (available in 4 variants) all the way through is bright, bold, colourful and instantly stands out. They say never judge a book by its cover but for once I did and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. With a 90’s retro pop art feel this comic was funky and crazy intertwined treat that creates a piece for all the ages. As a stand alone comic, for me it has it all; drama, suspense, action, comedy and also emotional ties that readers can relate to and it’s clear to see that Nick Canetti has a passion for making sure the readers have a good time but also a meaningful one.

With all the above said, at first I found it a tad bit confusing as we start the issue with a girl on a motorbike shooting through the galaxy on either a mission or a race of some sort. We then come to find out that she is the star of the comic, PINK LEMONADE. Now this isn’t me being negative but I’m sure you will all agree that when you first read a new comic it has to have an a background and an introduction of the character and unfortunately you didn’t really get that to begin with.

Its in the second part of the comic that we start to learn about Pink Lemonade; a goofy would be heroine that just wants to help people where she can. As she is awoken on a bench from a day dream by a girl and her mum, we find out that she once helped this young girl on her Pink Lemonade stand, and that’s where she got her name from and it’s from here that the story finally gets going. From OJ Bot fandom, movie set action and an incident with the police it was worth the wait.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The first part of the comic was slightly confusing and hard to get into but the second part was BOOM... interesting, intriguing, crazy and funny, I just wish it had started like this. Overall Pink Lemonade was a fun retro style comic to read that once it got going was pretty hard to put down. If you like comics that are wacky, insanely creative and slightly all over the place (in a good way) then this is the comic for you. Im looking forward to the next issue and I’m not going to give away any spoilers but who would have thought that Pink Lemonade would be a movie star!!!!

OnManicLine Comic Reviews: Omega Chapter 1&2

Jul 14, 2019

Chapter 1: Needles ...

Chapter 2: Home

I've read omega 1 and 2 and I gotta say it's a cross between 50 shades of grey and hostel. I think the comic works well as an adult concept, the artwork is unique and bold, the way the speech  bubbles and narrative are laid out really mend together seamlessly. The only thing i think is missing is a more in depth synopsis, readers want to be able to indulge themelves into the environment and this needs more details on the background to the origin of the story to get to that point. What is an omega? Where is the planet? What is the time frame? Who are the characters? What are their goals what are they trying to achieve?  There is defiantly potential and I look forward to finding out more in Chapter 3 release of Omega!
